Make a Difference:
Dear Friend,
In 2007 and 2008, Learning for a Lifetime changed the lives of hundreds of underserved children in Hawai'i. With your help we can reach many more.
Using the innovative Kids Talk Story curriculum, we help children write their life stories. They learn that “If you can write your own life story, you can write your own happy ending.” In this context, the students focus on perfecting language arts skills according to standards set forth by the Hawai'i Department of Education. And when the author finishes the story, he or she receives a hard cover edition to keep and treasure forever.
Research shows children in poverty have a better chance of academic success when they improve their language skills. Research shows that children learn at a faster rate when learning “in context.” The Kids Talk Story program allows children to control the topic. They write about themselves. They learn that in a story, just like in real life, the hero faces obstacles. They learn that a hero cares about other people. A hero makes mistakes. A hero never gives up. We teach them that they are the heroes of their own life stories. Therefore, if you can write your own life story, you can write your own happy ending.
Will you lend a hand to children in need? Your support will help kindergartners make their alphabet letters for the first time. Your support will help middle school students practice reading their personal stories out loud. Your support will help high school seniors write their personal essays for college.
On behalf of the Board of Directors at the Learning for a Lifetime Foundation, I thank you for helping underserved children learn to read and write.
Very truly yours,
